This top is absolutely one-of-a-kind and stunning. Museum quality. One of the few pieces from this collection that is not from Thailand, this traditional Chin top represents the finest weaving from this particular region in Myanmar (Burma).

I had the pleasure of meeting the family who founded and run the well-respected social enterprise from whence this came during a LM scouting trip to Yangon. More than just a store (they actually call themselves an “ethnographic textile gallery”), the founders and their daughter, who are themselves from the ethnic Chin group, specialize in vintage and contemporary production of ethnic Chin textiles. What started as a passion for collecting vintage textiles turned into a social enterprise that supports 11 groups and nearly 200 women weavers throughout Chin State. They have a multi-fold mission, which includes the preservation of natural dye and handwoven techniques, and research. They are also heavily involved in the capacity-building of and income generation for their weavers, who rely on the supplementary income from their weaving to support their families (they buy every textile the women make, regardless of quality, but only sell the highest quality). I really hope to return to Burma for LM to work more with this family business.
