I had the great fortune of connecting with Maia Tsinamdzgvrishvili during my first week in Georgia. Many consider Maia to be one of the finest textile artists in Georgia. A master of many mediums, Maia's work with wool and silk reflect a singular expression of traditional arts from this region. Her highly sought after scarves, sold mostly from her apartment in Tbilisi through word of mouth, really took my breath away. Rich in material, texture and imagination, each scarf has its own distinct design and personality. Maia hand paints designs inspired from by ornaments around the city (and even the iron staircase in her building - see photo below) onto silk panels (see photo below), which are then delicately fused with the hand-felted wool. The "Cloud" scarves, as I named them, as well as her incredible silk collages (one of which I have at home - see photo below), are felted with fibers and cocoons that Maia sources directly from families in Georgia who still cultivate silkworms. They are truly romantic pieces of wearable art.

A little more about Maia:

Maia is a graduate of the venerable Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts Textile Department. She has an extensive CV of accolades and exhibitions both in Georgia and abroad. Maia has participated in countless exhibitions around the world, including several solo exhibitions, one of which was in Florida. She has taught master classes in the U.S. and elsewhere, and her work has been published in several textile books. Among her many awards, she received "Best Tapestry of the Year" by the Ministry of Georgia for “Iraklis Window” in 1997. CV aside, she is also just a lovely person!!
