Vintage hemp, metal beads and metallic leather fringe?! This bag captures the quintessential rock ‘n’ roll spirit of this collection. But not only is it cool today, the most interesting part about this bag is that it’s actually a replica of a very old, traditional Akha tribe bag the designer had at her workshop (and, I might add, refused to part with when I picked it out amidst a sea of other cool, one-of-a-kind bags). The Akha people are one of the indigenous hill tribes that live in the mountains of Northern Thailand and elsewhere around the region. I believe the original bag, like much of the older Akha wears, had silver beading embroidered onto a handspun and indigo-dyed cotton. This bag, then, is a fresh (well, the hemp fabric is still hand embroidered and vintage) take on the existing high-fashion dress for which the Akha people are famous. Each bag is unique, as no two pieces of the vintage fabric are exactly alike.
