This jacket gets me emotional. It is becoming exceedingly harder to find vintage textiles of this condition and craftsmanship. The work on this absolutely one-of-a-kind Yao hill tribe jacket is breathtaking. The Yao are known for their embroidery skills. These types of jackets are characterized by hand loomed cotton dyed with indigo plant, an embroidered tail, and matching back patch. From what I understand, one’s status is reflected in the embroidery skill displayed on the jacket.

The embroidery on this coat’s tail is more substantial in size and crisp in detail than any I’ve come across or seen photos of, anywhere. This brilliant silk gold embroidery is found on the back patch as well as the sleeve cuffs. The lapels of the coat are embroidered with a white, blue and pink silk and bordered by bead work. There appears to be some bleeding from the silk dyes onto some of the white embroidery on the lapel but it is quite uniform throughout. It’s difficult to even fathom how many months (if not years) it took someone to make this once upon a time.
